Audio devices

SoundOverlay playback, recording, priority, volume, and mute concepts.

Playback and recording

SoundOverlay separates output devices, such as speakers and headsets, from input devices, such as microphones. A device can be connected without being the active Windows default.

Priority

Priority ordering is intended to make fallback behavior explicit. Put the devices you prefer most at the top and verify the result after connecting or disconnecting hardware.

Volume and mute

Per-device volume and mute controls depend on the capabilities Windows exposes for that endpoint. Availability can vary by device and driver.
